After eight years of delivering babies in its current facility, St.Vincent Carmel Hospital engaged with the community, talking to women and families to learn what they wanted in their hospital experience when having a baby. The results are more spacious rooms that feature the kind of tasteful décor one might find in a four-star hotel. The construction will be complete in the summer of 2011.
The new features include roomy bathrooms with decorative tile and featuring rain showerheads. Glass doors lead to rooms that are more comfortable both for the mother, her partner, and their family. Family waiting spaces have also been improved with new furniture.
“We’re excited about the expansion” said Michelle Slayman, Clinical Director of OB services at St.Vincent Carmel Hospital. “Our patients know they get exceptional care. Making it more luxurious is icing on the cake.”
Patients and community members suggested many of the specific changes during focus group meetings. “We reached out because we wanted to learn what to accentuate,” Slayman said. “They asked for a comfortable, hotel-like room for them and their families. They also asked for nice bathrooms with great showers.”
“They said, ‘We’re not sick, we’re healthy. And we want the space to be comfortable, pleasant, and desirable.’ That’s exactly what we’re doing.”
The remodel will also include enhanced and expanded exam, labor, and newborn intensive-care areas. “We want to provide a healthier environment for our intensive-care newborns,” Slayman said. “So we’re creating private and quiet space that these families need.”
