The OB/GYN you choose becomes your partner in medical care and provides critical input for the decisions you make about your health and about pregnancy and childbirth.
Any one of our doctors would be honored to fill this important role in your life. But because each doctor brings unique experiences and perspective to his or her practice, you probably want to do a little legwork to ensure that you find the individual with whom you feel most comfortable.
If you’re starting from scratch, make sure that you consider the basic practical points first:
- Does the doctor accept your medical insurance?
- Is his or her practice located in an area that’s convenient for you?
- Is the doctor accepting new patients?
- Does the doctor practice gynecology (which addresses all women’s health issues), obstetrics (a specialty that addresses pregnancy and childbirth), or both?
When you find the person who meets all of those broad requirements, start homing in on the finer points that you feel are important. For example, some doctors are more likely to take a very personal approach to your care. If you’re more of a “just the facts” kind of person, you probably would opt instead for a doctor who maintains a formal distance.
